Elecampane Root, (Inula helenium) is also known as marchalan, elf dock, wild sunflower, scabwort, horseheal and velvet dock. Some of these nicknames were the result of Elecampane Root being used to cure ailments in animals years ago.
Elecampane is a large plant that has beautiful bright yellow flowers and grows in Great Britain, central and southern Europe, parts of Asia west of the Himalayas, and in the eastern and central regions of North America. It is a member of the same plant family as the sunflowers and ragweed.
Elecampane has a very long and distinguished history of use. Its many health benefits were recognised by the Ancient Greeks and Romans who used this herb as a general health tonic and a remedy for many ailments.
