Krill are small shrimp-like creatures that live in the oceans and are very low on the food chain. You only need one or two capsules per day to make a whale of a difference in your health. These tiny crustaceans are a superior source of omega-3 oils - the essential fatty acids so important for maintaining our hearts, brains, skin and joints. Flaxseed, cold water fish and fish oils also provide omega-3 fatty acids, but krill oil is the new kid on the block with a few distinct advantages. In krill oil the omega-3’s are already connected to fat molecules like the ones in our bodies - phospholipids - so they are “ready to use” and don’t require any chemical conversion. This may be why krill oil is so effective at reducing inflammation, cholesterol and triglycerides. Studies have shown that krill oil can support heart, brain and vision health like other omega-3 sources, and it reduces inflammation and related pain especially in the joints. It can ease emotional and physical symptoms of PMS as well as increasing energy levels and mental sharpness. Not bad for tiny crustaceans! And the best part? No fishy aftertaste or fish burps! Krill also contain astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant that gives them their pink colour. According to tests, krill oil has more concentrated antioxidant power than vitamin E, lutein and lycopene. Cholesterol: In one study, 120 people were given krill oil, fish oil or a placebo. Krill oil reduced LDL (commonly referred to as “bad”) choles- terol by 34% and increased HDL (“good”) cholesterol by 43.5% com- pared to the placebo. In comparison, fish oil reduced LDL cholesterol by 4.6% and increased HDL cholesterol by 4.2%. Krill also lowered triglycerides.
